| Road Connections Friuli Venezia Giulia has a thorough highway system, which allows for fast connections along the Trieste-Venice-Milan/Rome route, as well as along the Trieste- Udine/Gorizia-Tarvisio-Villach route flowing into the European highway network (Alpen Adria Autobahn and Sud Autobahn). Furthermore, it allows a fast connection along the Trieste-Ljubljiana route via the frontier crossing of Fernetti. The connecting road around the city of Trieste, accomplished in 1990, stands for the direct access to the highway from the harbour, in the Punto Franco Nuovo area. Altogether, the road network of Friuli Venezia Giulia is 6.004 kilometres long, 200 of which are highways, 1.159 are main roads, 2.154 are provincial roads, 2.491 are rural municipal roads. Moreover, the traffic centre in Fernetti, the Slovene frontier crossing at about 15 km. from the harbour of Trieste, is a welding point for the road-rail intermodal transport system and for the rationalisation of customs operations. The traffic centre has about 300.000 square metres of large squares, 60.000 of which are destined for the customs area. Anas (National Roads Authority) is the authority that guarantees for the national practicability. It works at the adjustment and maintenance of the Italian state road network to keep it perfectly efficient, secure and practicable. Wherever possible, it also provides for a better integration with all other means of transportation.
